The simple answer is - about once a month.
In practice, the answer will vary by the type of plant, size of plant, and the environment it is placed in. For example, a large olive plant will require far more water than a small fiddle leaf fig, even if planted in similar sized planters.
The floating ring in the SWAP+ system is the best indicator for knowing when to water. Keep it at its highest level as often as possible; stop adding water when the ring stops moving upwards. Do not continue adding water after the ring has stopped moving up.
Even if the water level drops to empty (while you are away for a few weeks), there should be enough moisture in the soil for the plant to live off for another few weeks.
We designed the Planter SWAP+ system for minimal human intervention; it requires almost no regular maintenance. Treat it as you would any other indoor furniture, with its surface cleaned the same way.
The ceramic vessels are dishwasher safe. If necessary, simply lift out the plant bag with the provided handles, and run those vessels through a standard wash cycle. Hand washing works just as well.
Every three months, check the water vessel for water quality. If any soil or plant debris falls into it, then over time, the water inside will get contaminated. Simply disassemble, clean, reassemble, and refill with fresh water.
